10 September 202410 September 2024Gas Safety week: driving success with a safety focused culture Safety is central to everything we do, and continually emphasising a safety-first mentality has led to our success as a leading, multi-utility (link) construction (link), adoption(link) and metering organisation(link). Gas is a single element of our multi-utility offering. Creating a safety focused culture through continually communicating, learning, and repeatedly demonstrating the right way to do things ensures we aim to get every aspect of both gas and wider safety aspects right. Through our training and development programs, we identify the unique requirements of our colleagues and their position in the organisation, instilling safe working practices and an understanding of industry safety standards. Safety is not just gas related so we take this approach no matter what position someone holds. A targeted approach to safety Ralph Reekie, Head of HSE & QA says, “While our gas related teams undertake a wide range of activities, from emergency call outs, to meter exchanges – its crucial they have the technical training and up to date qualifications to operate safely. Our office based and support teams undertake training specific to their role, from emergency response procedures, to risk management.” Ralph continues “Using this targeted approach to safety, and encouraging reporting of any potential hazards, helps creates an environment where safety is central to us, and everyone has a stake in this shared goal.” Evolving our approach to safety As the UK pushes forward towards Net zero, new emerging technologies mean new safety challenges for us to approach. By keeping up to date new renewable technologies and continuously developing and expanding our safety training and methodology, we’re expertly placed to support our customers’ demand for transitioning smoothly and safely to renewable energy solutions.
