5 March 20255 March 2025Energy Assets Networks & MGISS – leading the way in NUAR compliance and intelligent data sharing At Energy Assets Networks, we recognise the evolving landscape of underground asset management and the increasing importance of accurate and efficient data sharing. As part of the Energy Assets Group, we’re committed to navigating new regulatory frameworks and enhancing safety and efficiency within our industry. Our extensive network of gas and electric infrastructure across the UK necessitates a solution that balances regulatory compliance, digitisation of asset records, and preparation for future expansion. The challenge As an Independent Gas Transporter and Independent Distribution Network Operator, Energy Assets Networks is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of an extensive underground infrastructure, ensuring reliable service across the UK. Managing such a widespread network requires precise and efficient GIS tools to monitor and protect our assets effectively. In the beginning, we reached out to MGISS due to the impending National Underground Asset Register (NUAR) legislation. Recognising the move towards national-level legislation, we aimed to stay ahead of the curve by investing in GNSS technology and building up our asset register. NUAR is a government initiative aimed at creating a unified, digital map of underground infrastructure to improve safety and efficiency. The upcoming legislation mandates that organisations like ours contribute accurate data to the platform, pushing for reliable systems to manage and share asset information. Complying with NUAR necessitates updating asset records and investing in advanced GIS solutions to meet the new standards. The solution To meet this need in time for the NUAR deadline, we invested in a Leica FLX100 Plus, recommended by MGISS for its high accuracy and suitability for utility mapping. This investment has allowed us to capture precise geospatial data in real-time, bridging the gap between our existing GIS framework and the demands of field operations. Overall, the solution from MGISS has made a tangible difference to Energy Assets Networks, from understanding what’s required to achieving compliance. Even before the NUAR legislation was announced, we knew we wanted to take the step toward in-field asset recording, and MGISS was at the forefront of this technology, making the decision easy. By partnering with MGISS, we have enhanced our ability to manage our underground assets effectively, ensuring compliance with upcoming regulations and positioning ourselves for future growth.
