13 September 202413 September 2024Why now’s the time to start a career in the utilities industry As the utilities sector evolves with the transition to renewable energy, now more than ever is the perfect time to start a utilities career. We’re established as one of the leading multi-utility organisations in Great Britain and offer an environment where you can develop your skills and feel valued, with your safety prioritised. Growth and modernisation With the growing demand for energy across Britain, from traditional and renewable sources, our current infrastructure is in need of modernisation and upgrades. Each year the national grid is investing around £1.3bn into grid infrastructure projects1, and organisations are looking at alternative methods to upgrade their own infrastructure. With this demand comes a requirement for a skilled workforce to complete these projects, from on-the-ground engineers or operatives to planners and back-office colleagues. Opportunities such as the Marketwide Half-hourly Settlement Programme (MHHS), showcase how the UK energy sector is changing and growing. MHHS is a national undertaking with all meter operators and energy suppliers to revolutionise the way we record and manage energy use. By late 2026, all homes and businesses will need to have a smart meter fitted and their energy usage submitted to OFGEM2. We’re at the forefront of this transition, so our teams are growing to support it. A net zero future Renewables will play a huge role in the future of the UK utilities sector. We’ve already established Energy Assets Net Zero offering lower carbon utility services, like commercial solar panels, AI energy consumption tools, or electric vehicle charge points. It’s estimated that by 2050 there will be over 1.8 million jobs within the low-carbon and renewable sector3, showing the demand for a skilled and competent workforce. Investing in our people This is why we constantly invest in our people; it’s a core principle for us. With us, you’ll be given industry-leading in-house training, and professional development opportunities, and work in an environment where your skills are valued and celebrated. Our metering engineers, for example, undertake a rigorous training and development course at our dedicated training facility, progressing onto shadowing and mentoring – all to make sure they are safe and ready to work independently. We then offer opportunities to develop their professional qualifications and help them progress their careers to different technical roles or positions in the organisation. If you’re interested in a career with a future-focused, nationwide, utilities infrastructure and metering organisation, we’re recruiting for a variety of exciting roles across Great Britain.
