3 March 20239 January 2024Our partnership with wildlife Blog by Sam Wright, ESG Director About World Wildlife Day March 3rd is World Wildlife Day, but what’s it about? It’s an official United Nations International day to celebrate all the wild animals and plants in the world and to recognise and appreciate the contribution that they make to our lives and the health of the planet. The date (March 3rd) was specifically chosen as it’s the anniversary of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) which was signed in 1973. This World Wildlife Day is a very special one, as it’s CITES’s 50th anniversary. In recognition of the work CITES does, and the collaborative work for conservation that is going on globally, the theme for this year’s World Wildlife Day is ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation’. Our wider environmental focus Environmental focus is a constant topic of conversation within Energy Assets. It’s ingrained in our culture, and we’re dedicated to being an environmentally and socially responsible business that acts with trust, honesty and transparency across the board. In October 2022 we began our inaugural environmentally focused initiative. We launched a year-long support programme with the WWF to help them with their planet-wide conservation efforts via their animal and wildlife adoption programmes. Each month we adopt a different animal which helps the WWF protect precious habitats around the world and all the species that rely on them. We’ve found that our colleagues have actively supported this initiative, voting on the name of each ‘animal of the month’ and showing an interest in the factsheets shared from the WWF. Our colleagues have also fully embraced our wider environmental focus. We award our office-based colleagues a day of their choosing solely for volunteering as we feel it’s important to give back to our communities. Whilst we leave the nature of volunteer work up to individuals, we’ve seen interest in environmentally themed volunteering activity such as litter picking, beachcombing and woodland maintenance to name a few. We can’t wait to see what environmentally focussed activities our colleagues choose! Volunteering is a great way to help illustrate the bigger picture in a real world way and help raise awareness for important issues that affect us all. We also help protect the environment, and by extent wildlife, through conscious recycling efforts. As of 2022, all our waste streams are 97% recycled – massively reducing the amount of waste produced ending up in landfills. Our reports also show that we’ve recycled over 1,100 tons of waste in 2022 and we’ve seen year-on-year reduction in direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions since 2020. The above are only the first of many future ways we’ll be able to help support the preservation and protection of the environment and wildlife. Marking World Wildlife Day To mark World Wildlife Day, we’ll be making a donation to The Wildlife Trusts. The Wildlife Trusts are a grassroots movement of more than 900,000 members, over 35,000 volunteers, 2,000 staff and 600 trustees. There are 46 individual Wildlife Trusts, each of which is a place-based independent charity with its own legal identity, formed by groups of people getting together and working with others to make a positive difference to wildlife and future generations, starting where they live and work.
